Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction)
Also known as erectile dysfunction, impotence is the most common sexual problem among males today. It is characterized by an inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection during sexual activity.
Impotence can be experienced by both younger and older men. As a matter of fact, studies show that nearly all men experience at least one episode of erectile dysfunction in their lives. It only becomes a problem if it is experienced in about 25 percent of the sexual activities of the male.
There are several causes of impotence or erectile dysfunction. They include having: an underlying medical condition or illness such as kidney disease, alcoholism, liver disease, testicle disorder, pituitary disorder, testosterone deficiency or other hormonal abnormalities; a physical condition or injury such as penile injury, spinal cord injury, pelvic injury, testicle injury, bladder injury or a recent prostate surgery; an existing blood or blood vessel disorder such as atherosclerosis, aortoiliac lesion, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases; a disorder which affects the nerves such as diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, alcoholic neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, heavy smoking and penile nerve disorder; a brain disorder such as brain damage, Parkinson's disease, brain tumor or stroke; a psychological condition such as depression, anxiety, excessive stress, low self-esteem, reduced libido or other psychological disorders; or using certain medications and drugs.
In the past, there were not a lot of available treatment options for this condition; however, because it has become such a common problem, a lot of studies have already been conducted in recent years, resulting to the discovery of numerous treatments and medications that can help in treating it. It is important to consult your physician to help you in determining which course of treatment would be best for you. Here are some of the most commonly used medications for treating impotence today.
